Sovereignty Triumphs in the 2025 Kentucky Derby

The 2025 Kentucky Derby, held on May 3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, was won by Sovereignty, a bay colt trained by Bill Mott and ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado. Sovereignty secured the victory with 7-1 odds, defeating the 3-1 favorite, Journalism, who finished second. Baeza claimed third place, while Final Gambit rounded out the top four.

This win marked the first Kentucky Derby victory for both Sovereignty's trainer, Bill Mott, and jockey Junior Alvarado. Mott had previously won the Derby in 2019 with Country House, while Alvarado, a Venezuelan-born jockey, celebrated his first Derby win. Sovereignty is owned by Godolphin, the thoroughbred racing stable owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Emir of Dubai.

Sovereignty's pedigree includes sire Into Mischief and dam Crowned, with grandsire Harlan's Holiday and damsire Bernardini. The colt's career record stands at 6 starts with 3 wins and 2 second-place finishes.

The 151st Kentucky Derby attracted an attendance of 147,406 spectators and maintained a purse of $5 million, with the winner receiving $3.1 million. The race was conducted over a distance of 1¼ miles on a muddy track, completing in a time of 2:02.31. Sovereignty's victory added to the legacy of the Kentucky Derby, continuing its tradition of thrilling performances and historic moments.
